*Wraps per inch (WPI) - this is a measure of yarn thickness. To measure WPI, count how many times the yarn wraps around a ruler in one inch. There are more wraps for thinner yarn and fewer wraps for thicker yarn.

Yarn and Hook Information
You can use any kind of yarn you'd like to make these heart crochet appliques. I used acrylic yarn, but cotton yarn or acrylic or cotton blends would work too.
Stitches and Abbreviations - US Terms
- Ch - Chain
- St/s - Stitch/es
- Sl st - Slip stitch
- Dc - Double Crochet
- Sk - Skip
- Tr - Treble Crochet (see special stitches below)
- [ ] at the end of each row indicates how many stitches are needed in that row.
Special Stitches
Treble Crochet
- Yarn over twice, insert hook into stitch and pull up a loop (4 loops on hook).
- Next, yarn over and pull through two loops (3 loops on hook).
- Then, yarn over and pull through two loops (2 loops on hook).
- Yarn over and pull through remaining loops (1 loop on hook).
Gauge
Gauge is not too important for this crochet heart applique pattern.

Instructions
Foundation: Ch4, sl st into 1st ch to form a loop.
Round 1: Ch3 (counts as st), 11 dc into ring, sl st into top of ch3 to join. [12 dc].
Round 2: Sk 2 sts, 8 tr into third st, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, (dc, tr) in next st, ch1, (tr, dc) in next st, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, 8 tr in next st, sl st between 1st and last st of round 1. Fasten off, and weave in any ends. [24 sts, ch1 at the bottom].
