There are times when you want to crochet, but the idea of starting a blanket or wearable just feels like too much.

That's where projects like this 5 petal flower crochet coasters really shine.

They're small enough to feel manageable, but still satisfying to finish, especially if you're short on time or want something you can actually use right away.

I often reach for projects like these when I want a break from larger makes or when I feel like adding something seasonal to the house without redecorating everything.

These 5 petal flower crochet coasters work beautifully as a spring craft, but they're not limited to one season.

With the right color choices, they're just as lovely for Mother's Day, Valentine's Day, or even tucked into a small Christmas gift bundle.

The flower shape feels soft and inviting without being over-the-top, which makes them easy to leave out on the table every day.

If you enjoy crochet flowers but want something a little more practical, this pattern strikes a really nice balance.

Because they're made with cotton yarn and a simple color change, 5 petal flower crochet coasters feel approachable even if you don't want anything fiddly.

They're also great if you like projects that let you experiment with color in a low-pressure way.

One coaster looks sweet on its own, but a small stack instantly feels intentional and gift-worthy.

Why You'll Love This Pattern

  • A practical way to enjoy 5 petal flower crochet coasters without committing to a large project
  • Perfect for spring makes, Mother's Day gifts, Valentine's Day touches, or small Christmas gifts
  • Uses cotton yarn, making the coasters absorbent and durable for everyday use
  • Simple color change adds visual interest without feeling complicated
  • Easy to make a matching set or mix colors for a more playful look
  • Works well as a one-skein or stash-friendly crochet project
  • A lovely way to enjoy crochet flowers in a functional form

Materials Needed

Yarn

  • #2 light (DK, light worsted, 8ply) 100% cotton or cotton blend yarn with about 15 wraps per inch (WPI)*
  • You will be working with double strands. You can pick 2 yarn colors that compliment each other or 2 balls of the same color.

You will need:

  • Col A: Center color, e.g. yellow: 0.25 ounces / 19 yards (7 grams / 17 meters)
  • Col B: Petal color, e.g. red, pink, etc.: 0.40 ounces / 27 yards (11 grams / 25 meters)

Hook

  • 4.5mm (7) hook

Other

  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

*Wraps per inch (WPI) - this is a measure of yarn thickness. To measure WPI, count how many times the yarn wraps around a ruler in one inch. There are more wraps for thinner yarn and fewer wraps for thicker yarn.

Yarn and Hook Information

I recommend using cotton yarn for these coasters as it is more durable and can handle heat well.

You can also use thicker cotton yarn, such as #4 (worsted, 10 ply), just adjust the hook size accordingly.

If you do use #4 worsted weight yarn, you will not need to work double stranded.

The reason why I use 2 strands of #2 light cotton yarn is so that you can play with color variations by using complimenting strands of yarn. Or if worsted weight yarn is not available to you.

Skill Level

★☆☆☆☆ - Beginner

Beginner-friendly and relaxing. I found that one coaster took me about 20-25 minutes to make once I got into the rhythm, making this a great option for an evening crochet session or a casual weekend project.

Crochet Tips, Yarn Choices, and Color Inspiration

  • Cotton yarn works best for coasters because it holds its shape and absorbs moisture well
  • Light pastels feel fresh for spring, while reds and pinks suit Valentine's Day beautifully
  • Neutral petals with a contrasting center give a clean, modern look
  • Holiday colors instantly transform these into Christmas-ready coasters
  • If your stitches feel tight, sizing up your hook slightly helps the petals relax
  • Blocking lightly can help the flower shape sit flat on the table

Perfect Occasions to Use This Craft

  • Great to use as gifts for friends and family. Perfect especially for Mother's Day and Valentine's Day.
  • Everyday use.
  • Practicing your crochet skills, of course!
