An easy ribbed crochet beanie is a stretchy, fitted hat made using simple stitch repetition that creates vertical ribbing for structure and flexibility.

It's a staple wearable project because it works up quickly, fits comfortably, and adapts well to different yarn weights and styles.

This easy ribbed crochet beanie is perfect for beginners who want a stylish, functional hat without complicated stitches.

This simple crochet beanie works beautifully as a gift, a last-minute cozy accessory, or a fun day crochet project when you want a fast win.

You can even personalize it by adding a fluffy pom-pom on top, creating a playful finish.

This crochet beanie can be made with just one skein of yarn, and it's also low sew too!

It's a cosy, wearable project that's perfect if you're after crochet gift ideas for birthdays and celebrations, and it pairs nicely with other practical makes like the chunky crochet scarf with fringe - Brooklyn or the textured back loop cowl - Margo.

Once you try this beginner friendly ribbed beanie, you'll see how easy it is to make more in different colors, textures, or with slight design variations for yourself or gifts.

Materials Needed

Yarn

  • #5 Bulky (chunky, 12 ply), acrylic or acrylic blend yarn with 8 Wraps Per Inch (WPI)*
  • You will need about 4.40 ounces / 136 yards (125 grams / 125 meters) of yarn.

Hook

  • 6.5 mm (K, 10.5) hook

Other

  • Yarn needle for weaving ends
  • Scissors

*Wraps per inch (WPI) - this is a measure of yarn thickness. To measure WPI, count how many times the yarn wraps around a ruler in one inch. There are more wraps for thinner yarn and fewer wraps for thicker yarn.

Yarn and Hook Information

For this crochet beanie, you can use any yarn type you'd like. However, I recommend using acrylic or an acrylic blend because it makes for a nice soft and warm beanie.

If you do use other yarn types, make sure to adjust the hook size and number of rows and starting chains as necessary.

Stitches and Abbreviations - US Terms

  • Ch - Chain
  • St/s - Stitch/es
  • Dc - Double Crochet
  • Blo - Back Loop Only

  • FO - Fasten Off
  • [ ] at the end of each row indicates how many stitches are needed in that row.

Gauge

4 inches x 4 inches (10 cm x 10 cm) = 11 double stitches x 6 rows (using double crochet)

Emily's Notes

Ribbed beanies are one of those projects where repetition actually works in your favor.

The more you crochet, the better the texture looks, and it's surprisingly forgiving if your tension isn't perfect.

Finished Size

Ribbed crochet beanie.

This ribbed crochet beanie is made for an adult ladies head. It is about 20 inches (50 cm) in circumference.

The finished crochet beanie is about 12 inches (30 cm) tall (when the cuff is not folded up).
