There's something really satisfying about making a mini mesh crochet bag that looks simple at first glance but ends up feeling like a proper everyday accessory.

This mini mesh crochet bag is a beginner-friendly crochet project that creates a lightweight, open-weave bag using simple stitches and repetitive construction.

It is worked in basic mesh stitch patterns, making it suitable for practising tension and stitch consistency while producing a functional everyday accessory.

In this pattern, you will make a mini mesh crochet bag using simple stitch repeats to create an open, flexible fabric that forms a lightweight everyday accessory.

You will work through a straightforward construction process to build the bag shape and handles, making it a practical project for practising tension, stitch consistency, and basic bag construction.

This crochet project is quick enough to make in an evening and it also works really well for market prep or handmade gift bundles because it looks stylish without requiring complex construction.

Materials Needed

Yarn

  • #3 Light (light worsted, DK, 8ply) acrylic yarn, with about 14 wraps per inch (WPI)*
    • You will need about 29 yards, 0.35 ounces (27 meters, 10 grams) of yarn.

Hook

  • 4.5 mm (7) hook

Other

  • Stitch Marker (optional)
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle (for weaving in ends)

*Wraps per inch (WPI) - this is a measure of yarn thickness. To measure WPI, count how many times the yarn wraps around a ruler in one inch. There are more wraps for thinner yarn and fewer wraps for thicker yarn.

Yarn and Hook Information

100% cotton yarn, cotton blends, or acrylic all work well for this project. Just remember to use an appropriate hook size for the yarn you are using.

  • Ch - Chain
  • St/s - Stitch/es

  • Sl st - Slip stitch

Gauge

Gauge is not too important for this crochet pattern.

Emily's Notes

Mini mesh bags are one of those projects where stitch consistency really changes the final look.

If your mesh openings are uneven, it can affect both the shape and strength of the bag.

I like to do a small tension swatch first, especially if I'm switching yarn types, because even small changes in tension can make the bag stretch more than expected once it's used.

But this isn't such a big issue because it's a small bag. Typically, you'd be using it for giving gift cards, or small things like lip balms.

Finished Size

The body of the bag is about 4 inches (11 cm) wide and 3.5 inches (9.5 cm) tall.

Will the mesh stretch too much?

It can stretch slightly, which is why yarn choice and tension are important.
