If you're looking for a crochet drawstring pouch that feels a little more elevated than a basic beginner bag, the Evelyn pouch is a really satisfying project to make.

This crochet drawstring pouch is a beginner-friendly project that creates a small, functional bag using simple stitches and basic shaping.

It is designed for storing small items such as jewellery, craft supplies, or travel essentials, and works well as a quick make or scrap yarn project.

The puff stitch adds texture and structure, giving it that soft, slightly "luxury handmade" feel while still keeping the construction simple and approachable.

This crochet pouch pattern (Evelyn) is especially useful because it works great as a giftable crochet project.

You can use it for gift cards, jewellery, small keepsakes, or even little self-care bundles.

Because it's compact and worked in a simple structure, this crochet gift pouch is also great for building confidence with texture stitches like puff stitch without committing to a large project.

Materials Needed

Yarn

  • #3 Light (light worsted, DK, 8ply) acrylic yarn, with about 14 wraps per inch (WPI)*
    • You will need about 0.64 ounces, 54 yards (18 grams, 49 meters) of yarn.

Hook

  • 4.5 mm (7) hook

Other

  • Stitch Marker (optional)
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle (for weaving in ends)

*Wraps per inch (WPI) - this is a measure of yarn thickness. To measure WPI, count how many times the yarn wraps around a ruler in one inch. There are more wraps for thinner yarn and fewer wraps for thicker yarn.

Yarn and Hook Information

For this crochet pouch you can use either cotton yarn or acrylic or a blend. Cotton yarn makes for a more durable bag and can look nicer if you are giving this bag as a gift.

Just remember to use an appropriate hook size for the yarn you are using.

Emily's Notes

Drawstring pouches are one of those projects where small changes in stitch tension really affect the final shape.

They're also a great way to experiment with stitch textures since the shape itself is so simple.

Finished Size

The finished size of the Evelyn crochet gift bag is about 4 inches (10 cm) wide and 6 inches (16 cm) long.

Make 2

Ch 84. FO. Leave a bit of a tail on either end. Make another. You need 2 drawstrings in total.

Completed drawstrings.

Putting in the drawstring

Take one drawstring and thread one of the tails through a yarn needle. Starting from the side hole on the left, weave your way around the holes until you end up back in the same hole.

Remove yarn needle, knot both ends of the drawstring tails and trim the tails.

Repeat for the other drawstring but this time start from the right side.
