Sometimes all a project needs is one simple detail to bring it to life and this sunflower crochet applique does exactly that.

It's a small, flat crochet motif that adds colour, texture, and a bit of personality without requiring a full project on its own.

This crochet sunflower motif is especially useful because it's so versatile. You can attach it to bags, hats, blankets, or even use it as a decorative element for gift wrapping.

It's one of those pieces you can make in multiples and keep on hand for whenever something needs a finishing touch.

Because it's worked as a compact shape, this sunflower crochet applique pattern is ideal for using up leftover yarn.

You only need small amounts for the petals and centre, which makes it perfect for scrap-friendly crochet sessions.

As a small giftable crochet project, it works beautifully on its own or as part of something bigger.

A set of appliques can be turned into embellishments for handmade gifts, or added to items to make them feel more thoughtful and personalised.

Materials Needed

Yarn

  • #3 Light (light worsted, DK, 8ply) acrylic yarn, with about 14 wraps per inch (WPI)*
    • You will need 3 colors:
      • Center color, e.g. brown [6 yards, 0.07 ounces / 5.4 meters, 2 grams]
      • Petal color, e.g. yellow [6 yards, 0.07 ounces / 5.4 meters, 2 grams]
      • Leaf color, e.g. green [6 yards, 0.07 ounces / 5.4 meters, 2 grams]

Hook

  • 4mm (G-6)

Other

  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle (for weaving in ends)

*Wraps per inch (WPI) - this is a measure of yarn thickness. To measure WPI, count how many times the yarn wraps around a ruler in one inch. There are more wraps for thinner yarn and fewer wraps for thicker yarn.

Rounds 1 to 3 for making a crochet sunflower applique.

Making the leaves

Make 1 large, make 1 small. For each leaf you will start with a foundation chain, but you will work across the chain and then around (along the bottom of the chain).

Large Leaf

Round 1: Ch12, 1 dc in 3rd ch from hook, 1 dc in each of the next 3 chs, 1 hdc in each of the next 3 chs, 1 sc in each of the next 2 chs, 1 sl st in next ch, rotate your chain to work along the bottom, sl st into next ch, 1 sc in each of the next 2 chs, 1 hdc in each of the next 3 chs, 1 dc in each of the next 4 chs, sl st into 1st dc to join. FO, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Small Leaf

Round 1: Ch10, 1 dc in 3rd ch from hook, 1 dc in each of the next 2 chs, 1 hdc in each of the next 2 chs, 1 sc in each of the next 2 chs, sl st into next ch, rotate your chain to work along the bottom, 1 sl st in next ch, 1 sc in each of the next 2 chs, 1 hdc in each of the next 2 chs, 1 dc in each of the next 3 chs, sl st into 1st dc to join. FO, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Completed crochet leaves.

Using a needle, first sew the small leaf to the back of your flower using the long tail you left for sewing.

The position of this is up to you. Next, sew the large leaf onto the back of the flower using the long tail you left for sewing. I like to sew this one behind the small leaf, but you can place it anywhere you like. FO, weave in any ends.
