  • #3 light milk cotton or cotton blend yarn with 12-13 Wraps Per Inch (WPI)*
    • You will need 3 colors: Col A (stem color), Col B (center color), Col C (petal color)

Hook

  • 2.5 mm hook

  • Scissors

*Wraps per inch (WPI) - this is a measure of yarn thickness. To measure WPI, count how many times the yarn wraps around a ruler in one inch. There are more wraps for thinner yarn and fewer wraps for thicker yarn.

Yarn and Hook Information

You can use any type of yarn you like.

However, I recommend using milk cotton or 100% cotton for more durability.

Acrylic yarn or acrylic blend yarn can also work well.

Stitches and Abbreviations - US Terms

  • Ch - Chain
  • St/s - Stitch/es
  • Col - Color
  • Sc - Single Crochet
  • FO - Fasten Off
  • Dc- Double Crochet
  • Tr - Treble Crochet (see special stitches below)
  • Picot - Picot Stitch (see special stitches below)
  • Sl St - Slip Stitch
  • Hdc - Half Double Crochet
  • [ ] at the end of each row indicates how many stitches are needed in that row.

Special Stitches

Treble Crochet

  1. Yarn over twice, insert hook into stitch and pull up a loop (4 loops on hook).
  2. Next, yarn over and pull through two loops (3 loops on hook).
  3. Then, yarn over and pull through two loops (2 loops on hook).
  4. Yarn over and pull through remaining loops (1 loop on hook).

Picot Stitch

  1. Chain 3
  2. 1 sl st into 2nd ch from hook. That's it!

Gauge

Gauge is not too important for this crochet sunflower bag charm.

Finished Size

Crochet sunflower hanging charm.

The sunflower head is about 2.5 inches (6 cm) in diameter (from one tip of the petal to another), and is about 7.5 inches (19 cm) long (from the tip of stem loop to the top of the sunflower head.

Instructions

  • Col A - Middle color, e.g. brown
  • Col B - Stem color, e.g. green
  • Col C - Petal color, e.g. yellow

Making the sunflower heart

Make 2 (one in Col A and one in Col B)

Round 1: Col A, make a magic ring, ch1 (not a st), 6 sc into ring, pull tail tight to close ring [6 sc].

Round 2: 2 sc in each st around. [12 sc].

Round 3: *1 sc in next st, 2 sc in next st*, repeat from * 6 times. [18 sc].

Round 4: *1 sc in each of the next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st,* repeat from * 6 times. [24 sc].

Round 5: 1 sc in each st around. FO. [24 sc].

Repeat instructions again but this time using Col B.

Making the Flower Head

Take both your sunflower hearts that you made in Col A and Col B, line the edges with the right sides facing out. You will be crocheting through both hearts to make your petals.

Round 1: Join Col C to any stitch on the outside of the hearts. *(ch 2, 1 dc, 1 tr, picot) in 1st st, (1 tr, 1 dc, ch 2) in next st, sl st in next st* completed petal. Repeat from * around until you have made 7 petals.

Fill your sunflower heart with fiberfill.

Repeat from * 5 more times to make 5 more petals. You should have 12 petals in total. FO.

Making the leaf

Foundation: Col B, ch 16.

Row 1: In 2nd ch from hook make *1 sc, 1 hdc in next ch, 1 dc in each of the next 3 chs, 1 sc in next ch, sl st in next ch, 1 sc in next ch, 1 hdc in next ch, 1 dc in each of the next 3 chs, 1 hdc in next ch, 1 sc in next ch*, repeat from * once more. FO.

Making the flower stem

Foundation: Col B, ch 70. FO, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Crochet leaf and stem.

Putting Your Sunflower Charm Together

Loop the end of your crochet stem (leaving the long tail on top - you will use this to sew your head to the stem). Then, place your leaf on the point where the loop ends. Sew leaf onto stem.

Next, thread the long tail from the stem onto a yarn needle and attach the stem to the flower head on the back (the side of the head that has Col B). FO and weave in any ends.
