Materials Needed

Yarn

#2 light (DK, light worsted, 8ply) 100% cotton or cotton blend yarn with about 15 wraps per inch (WPI)*

  • You will be working with double strands. You can pick 2 yarn colors that compliment each other or 2 balls of the same color.
  • You will need about 0.32 ounces (10 grams) [25 yards / 23 metres] of yarn.

Hook

  • 4.5mm (7) hook

  • Yarn needle for weaving ends
  • Scissors

*Wraps per inch (WPI) - this is a measure of yarn thickness. To measure WPI, count how many times the yarn wraps around a ruler in one inch. There are more wraps for thinner yarn and fewer wraps for thicker yarn.

Stitches and Abbreviations - US Terms

  • Ch - Chain
  • St/s - Stitch/es
  • Hdc - Half Double Crochet
  • Sl st - Slip stitch
  • Hdc Inc - Half Double Crochet Increase (see special stitches below)
  • Dc Inc - Double Crochet Increase (see special stitches below)
  • Dc - Double Crochet
  • Sc - Single Crochet
  • Tr - Treble Crochet (see special stitches below)
  • FO - Fasten Off
  • [ ] at the end of each row indicates how many stitches are needed in that row.

Special Stitches

Treble Crochet

  1. Yarn over twice, insert hook into stitch and pull up a loop (4 loops on hook).
  2. Next, yarn over and pull through two loops (3 loops on hook).
  3. Then, yarn over and pull through two loops (2 loops on hook).
  4. Yarn over and pull through remaining loops (1 loop on hook).

Half Double Crochet Increase / Double Crochet Increase

When you see hdc inc, simply just put 2 hdc into the same stitch. Likewise, when you see dc inc, simply just put 2 dc into the same stitch.

Gauge

Gauge is not too important for these star crochet coasters.

Instructions

Round 1: Working double stranded. Make a magic ring and ch1 (ch1 doesn't count as a stitch). Make 10 hdc into magic ring. Sl st into 1st hdc to join. [10 hdc].

Round 2: Ch1, hdc inc in each st around, sl st into 1st hdc to join. [20 hdc].
