A crochet star ornament is a small decorative piece shaped like a star, made using simple increases and decreases to form points. These ornaments are commonly used for holiday decor, gift wrapping accents, or garlands.

Worked flat in 2D, it's a simple yet striking addition to your tree, wreaths, garlands, or holiday gift packaging.

Using basic crochet stitches, this ornament is accessible to beginners, yet experienced crocheters can enjoy customizing colors, yarn types, and sizes.

The star's flat design makes it lightweight and versatile, so you can easily make a set in different colors to coordinate with your Christmas décor.

Whether you choose classic reds and greens, metallic yarn for sparkle, or soft neutrals for a modern look, this crochet idea lets you infuse handmade charm into your holiday celebrations.

You can make a few as stocking stuffers, hang them on wrapped presents, or gift a set to friends and family who appreciate thoughtful, handmade touches.

The pattern is quick to complete, making it an ideal last-minute Christmas project or a relaxing winter craft.

With minimal materials and stitches, it's a satisfying crochet pattern that brings festive cheer to your home.

Project Snapshot

Skill Level: Beginner
Time Needed: It took me under 30 minutes to make one star ornament.
Construction: Worked in rounds with pointed shaping
Best For: Holiday decor, gift embellishments, garlands

Materials Needed

Yarn

#2 light (DK, light worsted, 8ply) 100% cotton or cotton blend yarn with about 15 wraps per inch (WPI)*

Hook

  • 3.5 mm (E/4) hook, 2.5mm hook

Other

  • Sitich marker - optional
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle for weaving in ends

*Wraps per inch (WPI) - this is a measure of yarn thickness. To measure WPI, count how many times the yarn wraps around a ruler in one inch. There are more wraps for thinner yarn and fewer wraps for thicker yarn.

Yarn and Hook Information

We used 100% cotton yarn with approximately 15 WPI. This is in the category of #3 Light (DK, light worsted, 8-ply).

The recommended hook size for this yarn is 4mm. But, we opted to use a 3.5mm hook for the star and 2.5mm hook for the hanging loop, to achieve the desired size for this pattern.

Special Stitches

Treble Crochet

The treble crochet stitch is a popular and versatile stitch used in many crochet patterns. This stitch creates a tall and open texture. It adds height and dimension to your projects, allowing for beautiful designs and intricate patterns.

Below are the steps to perform a treble crochet stitch in U.S. terms.

  1. Yarn Over Twice: Wrap the yarn around your hook two times.
  2. Insert Hook: Insert your hook into the desired stitch.
  3. Yarn Over and Pull Through: Yarn over and pull through the stitch, bringing your total to four loops on the hook.
  4. Yarn Over and Pull Through Two Loops: Yarn over and pull through the first two loops on the hook, leaving three loops.
  5. Yarn Over and Pull Through Two Loops: Yarn over and pull through the next two loops, leaving two loops.
  6. Yarn Over and Pull Through Last Two Loops: Yarn over one last time and pull through the remaining two loops to complete the treble crochet stitch.

Gauge

Not critical for this ornament; adjust hook size for desired star size.

Emily's Notes

Star shapes are a great way to practice clean shaping because every point has to feel balanced. Once you get the rhythm, you can make a whole set really quickly.
