When the weather starts cooling down and you switch to warmer drinks, having a set of pumpkin crochet coasters just makes everything feel more like fall without needing a full décor reset.

These pumpkin crochet coasters are beginner-friendly seasonal projects that create small flat pumpkin-shaped mats designed for placing drinks on and protecting surfaces.

They are worked using simple stitches and shaping techniques, making them a quick and practical fall-themed crochet make.

Instead of making purely decorative pieces, you end up with coasters you'll actually reach for - coffee in the morning, tea in the evening, or even when setting the table for Halloween or Thanksgiving.

Because they're small, these pumpkin shaped crochet coasters are perfect for quick makes.

You can finish one in a short sitting, which makes them easy to batch when you want a full set ready for guests, gifts, or seasonal use.

A set of coasters feels complete on its own, but can also be paired with mugs, candles, or other small items to create a simple, thoughtful gift.

Materials Needed

Yarn

#2 light (DK, light worsted, 8ply) 100% cotton or cotton blend yarn with about 15 wraps per inch (WPI)*

  • You will be working with doubled stranded. You can pick 2 yarn colors that compliment each other or 2 balls of the same color.
  • You will need about:
    • Col A, pumpkin color, e.g. orange, about 0.40 ounces, 27 yards (11 grams, 25 meters) of yarn
    • Col B, stem color, e.g. brown, about 0.04 ounces, 2.5 yards (1 gram, 2.3 meters) of yarn
    • Col C, leaf color, e.g. green, about 0.04 ounces, 2.5 yards (1 gram, 2.3 meters) of yarn

Hook

  • 4.5 mm (7) hook
  • 3.5 mm (E/4) hook

Other

  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors

*Wraps per inch (WPI) - this is a measure of yarn thickness. To measure WPI, count how many times the yarn wraps around a ruler in one inch. There are more wraps for thinner yarn and fewer wraps for thicker yarn.

Yarn and Hook Information

I recommend using cotton yarn for these coasters as it is more durable and can handle heat well.

You can also use thicker cotton yarn, such as #4 (worsted, 10 ply), just adjust the hook size accordingly.

If you do use #4 worsted weight yarn, you will not need to work double stranded.

The reason why I use 2 strands of #2 light cotton yarn is so that you can play with color variations by using complimenting strands of yarn. Or if worsted weight yarn is not available to you.

Stitches and Abbreviations - US Terms

  • Ch - Chain
  • St/s - Stitch/es
  • Col - Color
  • Dc - Double Crochet
  • Sl st - Slip Stitch
  • Hdc - Half Double Crochet
  • FO - Fasten Off
  • Sc - Single Crochet
  • [ ] at the end of each row indicates how many stitches are needed in that row.

Gauge

Gauge is not too important for these pumpkin crochet coasters.

Emily's Notes

Coasters are one of the best projects for practising even tension because small inconsistencies show up quickly in flat shapes.

I like making a full set in one sitting so the tension stays consistent across all pieces.

Blocking them lightly at the end helps keep the pumpkin shape crisp and makes them sit flat on tables without curling.

Finished Size
