Materials Needed
Yarn
#2 light (DK, light worsted, 8ply) 100% cotton or cotton blend yarn with about 15 wraps per inch (WPI)*
- You will be working with double strands. You can pick 2 yarn colors that compliment each other or 2 balls of the same color.
- You will need about 0.35 ounces, 25 yards (10 grams, 23 meters) of yarn.
Hook
- 3.5 mm (E/4) hook
Other
- Yarn needle
- Scissors
*Wraps per inch (WPI) - this is a measure of yarn thickness. To measure WPI, count how many times the yarn wraps around a ruler in one inch. There are more wraps for thinner yarn and fewer wraps for thicker yarn.
Yarn and Hook Information
I recommend using cotton yarn for these coasters as it is more durable and can handle heat well.
You can also use thicker cotton yarn, such as #4 (worsted, 10 ply), just adjust the hook size accordingly.
If you do use #4 worsted weight yarn, you will not need to work double stranded.
The reason why I use 2 strands of #2 light cotton yarn is so that you can play with color variations by using complimenting strands of yarn. Or if worsted weight yarn is not available to you.

Emily's Notes
Coasters are one of those projects where simplicity actually matters because the goal is function, not complexity.
I like using cotton yarn for these since it holds shape well and handles moisture better than softer fibers.
Keeping edges straight is the main focus here because even small tension changes become noticeable in such a small square.
Finished Size

The finished size of this crochet moss stitch coaster is about 4 inches (9.5 cm) x 4 inches (9.5 cm).
