Who says coasters have to be ordinary?

These frog crochet coasters turn everyday cups into a fun, cute experience while staying fully functional.

With a bright green base, simple shaping, and embroidered facial details, they're an approachable project for beginners who want to explore animal-themed crochet coasters or practice small colorwork.

This crochet frog coaster project is perfect if you're looking for a short, satisfying make that's ready in an evening or a quick weekend crochet project.

You can experiment with shades of green, add tiny accents for eyes, or even pair them with other animal coasters to create a playful set.

Once you try one, it's hard not to make several more for gifting or seasonal table décor.

Why You'll Love This Pattern

  • Fun, animal-themed design that brightens up any table
  • Beginner-friendly while introducing basic shaping and embroidery
  • Quick to make - perfect for a weekend crochet project or evening craft
  • Makes a charming gift for friends, kids, or animal lovers
  • Can be paired with other animal coasters for a playful set

Materials Needed

Yarn

  • #2 light (DK, light worsted, 8ply) 100% cotton or cotton blend yarn with about 15 wraps per inch (WPI)*
  • You will be working with double strands. You can pick 2 yarn colors that compliment each other or 2 balls of the same color.

You will need:

  • Col A: Belly color, e.g. yellow 0.04 ounces / 2.50 yards (1 gram / 2.3 meters)
  • Col B: Body color, e.g. green 0.70 ounces / 47 yards (19 grams / 44 meters)
  • Black and white yarn to embroider on eyes and a mouth.

Hook

  • 4.5 mm (7) hook

Other

  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors

*Wraps per inch (WPI) - this is a measure of yarn thickness. To measure WPI, count how many times the yarn wraps around a ruler in one inch. There are more wraps for thinner yarn and fewer wraps for thicker yarn.

Yarn and Hook Information

I recommend using cotton yarn for these coasters as it is more durable and can handle heat well.

You can also use thicker cotton yarn, such as #4 (worsted, 10 ply), just adjust the hook size accordingly.

If you do use #4 worsted weight yarn, you will not need to work double stranded.

The reason why I use 2 strands of #2 light cotton yarn is so that you can play with color variations by using complimenting strands of yarn. Or if worsted weight yarn is not available to you.

Skill Level

★☆☆☆☆ - Beginner

It took me about 30 - 40 minutes per coaster, making this a quick crochet project you can complete in one sitting.
