Sometimes the best projects are the ones that don't try too hard and this square crochet drink coaster is exactly that.

It's built using the moss stitch, which gives you a subtle texture that looks neat and structured without feeling busy or overdesigned.

If you've only made basic coasters before, this moss stitch crochet coaster is a nice step forward.

The stitch pattern is repetitive and easy to follow, but it creates a more polished finish than standard stitches.

It's the kind of detail that makes a simple piece feel more intentional.

Because it's square, this crochet coaster moss stitch pattern stacks neatly, sits evenly under cups, and works well for creating matching sets.

It also has that balanced, minimal look that fits easily into modern, neutral, or everyday home styles.

As a small giftable crochet project, this is one of those reliable go-to makes. It's quick, practical, and easy to customise, which makes it perfect for batching when you want a set ready for gifting or everyday use.

Why You'll Love This Pattern

  • This square crochet drink coaster uses a simple, repeatable moss stitch pattern
  • Creates a flat, even surface that works well under cups
  • Beginner-friendly while still looking clean and polished
  • A practical small giftable crochet project you can use daily
  • Easy to make matching sets for home or gifts
  • Works well with a wide range of yarn colours
  • Great for relaxing, repetitive crochet sessions
  • Minimal design that fits most home styles

Materials Needed

Yarn

#2 light (DK, light worsted, 8ply) 100% cotton or cotton blend yarn with about 15 wraps per inch (WPI)*

  • You will be working with double strands. You can pick 2 yarn colors that compliment each other or 2 balls of the same color.
  • You will need about 0.35 ounces, 25 yards (10 grams, 23 meters) of yarn.

Hook

  • 3.5 mm (E/4) hook

Other

  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors

*Wraps per inch (WPI) - this is a measure of yarn thickness. To measure WPI, count how many times the yarn wraps around a ruler in one inch. There are more wraps for thinner yarn and fewer wraps for thicker yarn.

Skill Level

★★☆☆☆ - Beginner

These square crochet coasters took me under 45 minutes to make.

Yarn and Hook Information

I recommend using cotton yarn for these coasters as it is more durable and can handle heat well.

You can also use thicker cotton yarn, such as #4 (worsted, 10 ply), just adjust the hook size accordingly.

If you do use #4 worsted weight yarn, you will not need to work double stranded.

The reason why I use 2 strands of #2 light cotton yarn is so that you can play with color variations by using complimenting strands of yarn. Or if worsted weight yarn is not available to you.
