This skull crochet coaster pattern is a beginner-friendly small motif project that creates a flat, functional coaster shaped like a skull using simple stitches. It is ideal for seasonal decor, themed gifts, or adding character to everyday home accessories.
There's a fun line in crochet between something practical and something a little unexpected, and skull crochet coasters sit right on that edge.
At first glance, they're just coasters. Small, flat, useful pieces meant to protect surfaces. But the skull shaping adds a bit of personality that changes how they feel in use, especially when worked into a set.
This skull crochet coaster pattern stays grounded in simple construction. You're still working with basic stitches and straightforward shaping, but the silhouette gives it a more defined look without adding complexity to the process.
If you enjoy themed small projects, this pairs naturally with a pumpkin crochet coaster, especially if you like seasonal makes that can be grouped into sets.

Why You'll Love This Pattern
- Quick to make, which makes it easy to complete multiple coasters in one sitting
- These skull crochet coasters use simple stitches while still creating a clearly defined motif shape
- Adds personality to everyday table setups without changing functionality
- Works well as a themed set for gifting or seasonal decor
- Easy to repeat once you understand the shaping flow
- Great way to use small amounts of yarn in a meaningful way
Project Snapshot
This is a beginner-friendly crochet project using basic stitches and simple shaping. Most people can complete a skull crochet coaster in about 30 minutes.
It works well as a quick repeat project for building sets.
Materials Needed
Yarn
#2 light (DK, light worsted, 8ply) 100% cotton or cotton blend yarn with about 15 wraps per inch (WPI)*
- You will be working with doubled stranded. You can pick 2 yarn colors that compliment each other or 2 balls of the same color.
- You will need about 0.22 ounces (6 grams) / 10 yards (9 metres) of yarn.
Hook
- 5 mm (H/8)
Other
- Yarn Needle
- Scissors
*Wraps per inch (WPI) - this is a measure of yarn thickness. To measure WPI, count how many times the yarn wraps around a ruler in one inch. There are more wraps for thinner yarn and fewer wraps for thicker yarn.
Yarn and Hook Information
I recommend using cotton yarn for these coasters as it is more durable and can handle heat well.
You can also use thicker cotton yarn, such as #4 (worsted, 10 ply), just adjust the hook size accordingly.
If you do use #4 worsted weight yarn, you will not need to work double stranded.
The reason why I use 2 strands of #2 light cotton yarn is so that you can play with color variations by using complimenting strands of yarn. Or if worsted weight yarn is not available to you.

Emily's Notes
The shape depends more on placement and proportion than complex stitch work. Keeping tension consistent helps maintain symmetry, especially around curved or hollow areas.
Blocking can make a noticeable difference here, helping the skull shape settle into a more defined outline.
Because this is a flat motif, slight variations between coasters are normal and can actually add character to a full set.
Finished Size

This crochet skull coaster is about 4 inches (10 cm) wide.
