The wattle stitch combines three easy stitches - single crochet, chain, and double crochet - to form a pattern that's soft, squishy, and full of depth.

One of the best parts about the wattle stitch crochet blanket is its versatility.
The stitch has a gentle drape while maintaining structure, making it ideal for blankets that are both warm and breathable.
This project is also a wonderful crochet idea for anyone who enjoys meditative stitching - it's rhythmic, easy to memorize, and works up steadily without too much counting.

Materials Needed
Yarn
- Super bulky (#6) blanket yarn (or chenille yarn) with 4 WPI*
- You can use a single color or variegated yarn like we did.
- You will need about 22 ounces (620 grams) of yarn
- You will need about 453 yards (415 metres) of yarn.
Hook
- 12 mm (P/16) hook
Other
- Stitch marker (optional)
- Scissors
- Yarn Needle
*Wraps per inch (WPI) - this is a measure of yarn thickness. To measure WPI, count how many times the yarn wraps around a ruler in one inch. There are more wraps for thinner yarn and fewer wraps for thicker yarn.
Yarn and Hook Information
The recommended hook size for super bulky blanket yarn is typically 8mm (L/11).
However, for this pattern, I opted to use a 12mm (P/16) hook to give the blanket a more looser feel.

Special Stitches
Reverse Single Crochet (Crab stitch)
The reverse single crochet, also known as the crab stitch, is a very simple stitch that can add texture to your crochet. It's great to use for edgings, especially on baskets.
To reverse single crochet, instead of working in the direction you normally would, you instead work backward. So, normally you would work towards the left. In reverse single crochet, you would work towards the right.
How to reverse single crochet (reverse sc):
- Insert your hook into the stitch to the right.
- Yarn over and pull up a loop. You should now have 2 loops on your hook.
- Yarn over and pull through both loops, like you would in a normal single crochet.
Crochet Wattle Stitch
The wattle stitch is a textured crochet stitch pattern made by working a simple sequence into the same space to create a dense, woven look.
How to make a crochet wattle stitch
- Start with an even number of chains or stitches.
- Skip the first 2 chains.
- In the next chain, work 1 single crochet, ch 1, and 1 double crochet. Completed wattle stitch.
The picture below shows how to make the wattle stitch in the blanket, working in the chain 1 spaces.

Gauge
4 inches x 4 inches (10 cm x 10 cm) = 3 wattle stitch clusters x 3 rows
Finished Size

The finished size of this crochet lap blanket is about 42 inches x 32 inches (106 cm x 82 cm).
You can adjust the number of rows and chains to make a bigger or smaller blanket.

Crochet Tips, Yarn Choices, and Color Inspiration
- Use solid colors to highlight the wattle stitch texture
- Try gradient or self-striping yarn for a soft ombré effect
- An alternative yarn type you could use is acrylic yarn. This offers easy care and durability. If you use other yarn types you may need to adjust the number of rows you do to keep the blanket to size.
- Cotton yarn gives structure and lightness for summer throws
- A great crochet pattern for stash-busting stripes or borders
FAQ
Worsted weight acrylic yarn or even blanket yarn is a great choice, but cotton or wool blends also look beautiful.
If you want the blanket to work out the same size as in the pattern, but want to use different yarn, make sure you use yarn with wraps per inch that is the same as listed in the pattern.
Definitely. It's made with basic stitches and is very forgiving - perfect for learning texture work.
Blocking isn't required but can help smooth out edges and enhance the stitch pattern.
