Materials Needed

Yarn

#2 light (DK, light worsted, 8ply) 100% cotton or cotton blend yarn with about 15 wraps per inch (WPI)*

You will need two colors - one for the tree and one for the trunk.

  • Color A: 3 yards (3 metres) - for the tree body
  • Color B: 1 yard (0.90 metres) - for the trunk

Hook

  • 4mm (G/6) crochet hook

Other

  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

Optional: small beads, buttons, or star embellishment

*Wraps per inch (WPI) - this is a measure of yarn thickness. To measure WPI, count how many times the yarn wraps around a ruler in one inch. There are more wraps for thinner yarn and fewer wraps for thicker yarn.

Stitches and Abbreviations - US Terms

  • Col - Color
  • Ch - Chain
  • Dc - Double Crochet
  • Hk - Hook
  • St/s - Stitch/es
  • Hdc - Half Double Crochet
  • [ ] at the end of each row indicates how many stitches you should have in that row.

Instructions

Col A = Green (for the tree body)

Col B = Brown (for the trunk)

Row 1: Col A, leave a long tail (to use as a hanging loop later) ch 2, 2dc in 2nd ch from hk, turn [2 sts]

Row 2: Ch3 (counts as stitch, in each row), 1 dc in same st, 2 dc in next st, turn [4 sts]

Row 3: Ch3, 1 hdc in same st, 2 hdc in next 2 sts, hdc in last st, turn [6 sts]

Row 4: Ch3, dc in 2nd st from hk and in each st across, turn [6 sts]

Row 5: Ch3, dc in 2nd st from hk, 2 hdc in next st, hdc in next st, 2dc in next st, dc in last st, turn [8 sts]

Row 6: Ch3, hdc in 2nd st from hook and in each st across turn [8 sts]

Row 7: Ch3, dc in same st, dc in next st, 2hdc in next st, hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st, dc in last 2 sts [10 sts]

Your Christmas tree should be about 3 inches (7.5 cm) tall. Fasten off.

Row 8: Col B, join to 3rd  st, ch3, hdc in 3 sts, turn [4 sts]

Row 9: Ch3, hdc in each st [4 sts].

Fasten off, weave in ends. Use the long tail you left at the beginning to make a hanging loop.
