If you enjoy crochet projects that are quick, useful, and gift-worthy, a long crochet heart bookmark checks all the boxes.

A long crochet heart bookmark is a slim decorative strip finished with a heart motif, designed to mark pages in books. It combines simple linear crochet with shaping at the ends for a functional and giftable accessory.

It's an ideal project for using leftover yarn while still creating something that feels intentional and special.

What makes this long crochet heart bookmark especially appealing is its versatility.

It works beautifully as a handmade gift, for Valentine's Day, a classroom project, or a personal accessory for everyday reading.

Crochet heart bookmarks are also excellent beginner projects because they use basic stitches and simple shaping.

If you're exploring how to crochet accessories that don't require sizing or complex construction, this crochet heart bookmark is a relaxing and rewarding option.

This long heart crochet bookmark works nicely with smaller giftable makes like this heart crochet trinket box, especially for simple handmade gifts.

It also belongs in these small crochet gift ideas that are quick to make.

Project Snapshot

Skill Level: Beginner
Time Needed: Perfect quick crochet project. It took me under 30 minutes to make one crochet bookmark.
Best For: Gifts, book lovers, scrap yarn projects
Customizable: Length, color
Notes: Light tension keeps bookmark flat

Materials Needed

Yarn

  • #2 light (DK, light worsted, 8ply) 100% cotton or cotton blend yarn with about 15 wraps per inch (WPI)*
    • You will need about 0.10 ounces (3 grams) / 8.2 yards (7.5 meters) of yarn.

Hook

  • 3 mm hook

Other

  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors
  • Stitch Marker (optional)

*Wraps per inch (WPI) - this is a measure of yarn thickness. To measure WPI, count how many times the yarn wraps around a ruler in one inch. There are more wraps for thinner yarn and fewer wraps for thicker yarn.

Yarn and Hook Information

I recommend using 100% cotton for your crochet bookmark. This is because it will make it more durable.

Of course, you can use other yarn types if you want too.

Stitches and Abbreviations - US Terms

  • Ch - Chain
  • St/s - Stitch/es
  • Hdc - Half Double Crochet
  • Tr - Treble Crochet (see special stitches below)
  • Sl st - Slip Stitch
  • Sc - Single Crochet
  • Dc - Double Crochet
  • FO - Fasten Off
  • [ ] at the end of each row indicates how many stitches are needed in that row.

Special Stitches

Treble Crochet

  1. Yarn over twice, insert hook into stitch and pull up a loop (4 loops on hook).
  2. Next, yarn over and pull through two loops (3 loops on hook).
  3. Then, yarn over and pull through two loops (2 loops on hook).
  4. Yarn over and pull through remaining loops (1 loop on hook).

Gauge

Gauge is not too important for this crochet heart bookmark.

Emily's Notes

Bookmarks are great because they feel thoughtful without requiring much time or yarn. The heart detail at the end is what gives it personality, even the simplest version feels intentional.

Finished Size

Crochet bookmarks.

The finished crochet heart bookmark size is about 8 inches (20 cm) long (including the tassel) and 2 inches (5 cm) wide.

Now, you will make the tail of the bookmark. You can make the tail of the bookmark as long or short as you like. The length will depend on the number of chs you make.

Ch 26 (or as many chs as you'd like), in 2nd ch from hook, sl st, sl st in each remaining ch until you reach the heart [25 sl st should be made if you chained 26].

In the same st as the last 2 sc you made in the heart (before you made your chains) 1 sc, then 1 sc in each of the next 3 sts, sl st into 1st sc to join. FO and weave in any ends.

Making the tassel

Take some yarn and cut it to about 7 inches (17 cm) long. You will need 2-3 strands of this length.

Next, insert your hook at the bottom of your bookmark's tail from back to front.

Then, taking the strands of yarn, fold them in half. After this, place them on your hook.

Pull the folded ends of the yarn through your bookmark's tail to form a loop.

Then, pull the ends of the yarn through the loop and pull it tight to make a knot. To finish your bookmark, trim the ends of the yarn strands to your desired length.
