Row 3 - 10: Repeat row 2. After row 10, the rectangle piece should be about 4.5 inches (11 cm) long. Do not fasten off.

Process of making a mini crochet beanie.

Shaping the beanie:

Step 1: With the right side facing up, join the short edges of the piece by sl st the two sides together. FO, leaving a long tail for sewing and for making a hanging loop. It is best to make it longer then you think.

Step 2: Thread the long tail end onto a needle, make a running stitch along one of the open edges.

Pull on the running stitch to cinch the side closed. Fasten off, and turn your beanie inside out so that the right side is now facing out.

Make a hanging loop with the remaining yarn (you could thread a pom pom onto the yarn before doing this and then make the hanging loop), knot to secure it. Weave in any ends.

Instead of a pom pom you could add a bead to the hanging loop.

*** If you want a slightly wider beanie, add an extra row before sewing it together.

Crochet Tips, Yarn Choices, and Color Inspiration

  • Acrylic yarn works great - it's soft, holds shape, and easy to wash
  • You could alternatively use cotton yarn, but you will need to adjust the hook you use. The final crochet beanie may be a different size as well.
  • Try holiday colors like red, green, and white
  • Use metallic yarn for a sparkle effect
  • Mix and match pom pom colors for fun variety
  • Perfect stash-buster crochet pattern for small yarn leftovers

FAQ

Can I make the ornament larger?

Yes! Use thicker yarn and a larger hook for a slightly bigger hat.

Do I have to use a pom pom?

No - you can finish the top with a simple loop or bead instead.

Is this suitable for beginners?

Absolutely. The mini beanie crochet ornament uses basic stitches and simple shaping, perfect for new crocheters.
