Materials Needed

Yarn

#2 light (DK, light worsted, 8ply) 100% cotton or cotton blend yarn with about 15 wraps per inch (WPI)*

  • You will need about 0.20 ounces (6 grams) of yarn.
  • You will need 3 colors (suit color, belt color, and belt buckle color)

Hook

  • 4 mm hook
  • 3.5 mm (E) hook

Other

  • Yarn needle for weaving ends
  • Scissors

*Wraps per inch (WPI) - this is a measure of yarn thickness. To measure WPI, count how many times the yarn wraps around a ruler in one inch. There are more wraps for thinner yarn and fewer wraps for thicker yarn.

Stitches and Abbreviations - US Terms

  • Ch - Chain
  • St/s - Stitch/es
  • Hk - Hook
  • Col - Color
  • Hdc - Half Double Crochet
  • Blo - Back Loop Only
  • Sl st - Slip Stitch
  • Traverse Sl st - see special stitches below
  • [ ] at the end of each row indicates how many stitches are needed in that row.

Special Stitches

Traverse slip stitch

  1. Insert hook into stitch, yarn over (1 loop on hook).
  2. Insert hook into next stitch, pull up a loop and then pull that loop through the 1st loop already on your hook. Completed traverse slip stitch.

Gauge

Not too important for these Christmas crochet coasters.

Instructions

  • Col A = Suit color, e.g. red, or green.
  • Col B = Belt Color, e.g. black.
  • Col C = Belt buckle color, e.g. gold or yellow.

Foundation: Using your 4mm hk, col A Ch16.

Row 1: 1 hdc in 3rd ch from hook, hdc in each remaining ch. Turn. [14 hdc].

Row 2: Ch 2, 1 hdc blo in each st across. Turn. [14 hdc].

Row 3 - 4: Repeat row 2. At the end of row 4, fasten off.

Row 5 - 6: Join with Col B, ch2, 1 hdc blo in each st across. Turn. At the end of row 6, fasten off. [14 hdc].

Row 7: Change back to Col A, ch2, 1 hdc blo in each st across. Turn. [14 hdc].

Row 8 - 9: Repeat row 7. After row 9, your crochet piece should be about 3 inches x 2.5 inches (7.5 cm x 6 cm). Turn but do not fasten off.

Making the border:

Round 1: Ch 2, hdc in each stitch around all edges, making 3 hdc in each corner.

Sl st the last hdc into the 1st hdc. Fasten off and weave in any ends.

Making the belt buckle:

Using your 3.5mm hk, Col C, making sure the right side is facing up. Traverse sl st into the top of row 6 (top of the belt) on the 5th st from the left (not including the border). 5 sl st along the row (over the 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th sts of the row).

Turn your work, work 3 sl st over rows 6, 5 and 4.

Turn your work again, just like before work 5 sl st along the bottom of the belt. These should be parallel to the top 5 sl sts.

Turn your work, work 3 sl st up along rows 5, 6, and 7 to be where you started.

Fasten off and weave in any ends.
