Materials Needed

Yarn

#4 medium yarn (also known as worsted, Afgan, Aran, or 10 ply) with 11 WPI*

  • You will need about 1 ounce (30 grams) of yarn
  • About 51 yards (47 metres) of yarn

You will need 4 colors for this Christmas crochet cutlery holder - the main color, belt color, belt buckle color, and cuff color.

Hook

  • 5 mm (H - 8) hook
  • 4 mm (G - 6) hook

Other

  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

*Wraps per inch (WPI) - this is a measure of yarn thickness. To measure WPI, count how many times the yarn wraps around a ruler in one inch. There are more wraps for thinner yarn and fewer wraps for thicker yarn.

Stitches and Abbreviations - US Terms

  • Ch - Chain
  • Col - Color
  • Hk - Hook
  • Dc - Double Crochet
  • Blo - Back loop only
  • Sl st - Slip stitch
  • St/s - Stitch/es
  • Sc - Single Crochet
  • Traverse Slip Stitch (see special stitches below)
  • FO - Fasten off
  • [ ] at the end of each row indicates how many stitches are needed in that row.

Special Stitches

How To Traverse Slip Stitch

  1. Insert hook into stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop (1 loop on hook).
  2. Insert hook into next stitch, pull up a loop and then pull that loop through the 1st loop already on your hook.

Gauge

4 inches x 4 inches (10 cm x 10 cm) = 14 stitches x 7 rows.

Instructions

Col A - Suit color, e.g. red

Col B - Belt color, e.g. black

Col C - Belt buckle, e.g. gold/yellow

Col D - Cuff color, e.g. white

For the Front Piece

Foundation: Col A,5mm hk, Ch 16

Row 1: 1 dc in 3rd ch from hook, 1 dc in each remaining ch. Turn. [14 sts].

Row 2: Ch2, 1 dc blo in each st across. Turn. [14 sts].

Row 3 - 5: Repeat row 2.

Row 6: Change to Col B, ch 2, 1 dc blo in each st across. Turn. [14 sts].

Row 7: Repeat row 6.

Row 8 - 12: Change back to Col A, repeat row 2. Fasten off and weave in any ends.

Making the belt buckle:

Take your front piece crochet rectangle, making sure the right side is facing up.

Using your 4mm hk, Col C, Traverse sl st into the top of row 7 (top of the belt) on the 6th st from the left. 4 sl st along the row (over the 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th sts of the row).

Turn your work 180 degrees clockwise, work 4 sl st over rows 7, 6, 5 and 4.

Turn your work 90 degrees clockwise, just like before work 4 sl st along the bottom of the belt. These should be parallel to the top 4 sl sts.

Turn your work 90 degrees, work 4 sl st up along rows 4, 5, 6, and 7 to be where you started.

Fasten off and weave in any ends.

Making the back piece

Foundation: Col A,5mm hk, Ch 16

Row 1: 1 dc in 3rd ch from hook, 1 dc in each remaining ch. Turn. [14 sts].

Row 2: Ch2, 1 dc blo in each st across. Turn. [14 sts].

Row 3 - 12: Repeat row 2. Fasten off, weave in any ends.

Process of making a Santa crochet cutlery holder.

Putting the Crochet Cutlery Holder Together

Place the two crochet rectangles on top of each other, the top piece being the one you added the belt buckle. Make sure that both right sides are facing out.

Starting from the top left corner with the buckle facing up, using Col A, working through both pieces to join - sc in each st down the long left edge, 3 sc in the corner, along the bottom edge, 3 sc in the corner, and then up the long right edge. Leave the top edge open. Fasten off and weave in any ends.

Making the White Strip

You will be working in the round.

Using Col D, 5mm hk, join Col D to top of cutlery holder.

Round 1: Ch 2, dc into same st as ch2, 1 dc into each st around, sl st into 1st dc to join. [28 dc].

Round 2 - 3: Repeat round 1. At the end of round 3, FO, and weave in the end.

Finishing the Crochet Cutlery Holder

Fold the white strip down so that it sits on top of the red. Completed crochet cutlery holder.
