Materials Needed

Yarn

  • #3 Light (light worsted, DK, 8ply) acrylic yarn, with about 14 wraps per inch (WPI)*
    • Col A = Mushroom top color, e.g. red
    • Col B = Inner square color, e.g. brown
    • Col C = Stem color, e.g. white
    • Col D = Border color, e.g. yellow

Hook

  • 4 mm (G/6) hook

Other

  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors

*Wraps per inch (WPI) - this is a measure of yarn thickness. To measure WPI, count how many times the yarn wraps around a ruler in one inch. There are more wraps for thinner yarn and fewer wraps for thicker yarn.

Stitches and Abbreviations - US Terms

  • Ch - Chain
  • St/s - Stitch/es
  • Col - Color
  • Hdc - Half Double Crochet
  • Dc - Double Crochet
  • Sl st - Slip Stitch
  • Blo - Back loop only
  • Sc - Single Crochet
  • Ch2-sp - Chain 2 space
  • FO - Fasten Off
  • [ ] at the end of each row indicates how many stitches are needed in that row.

Gauge

Gauge is not too important for this mushroom granny square.

Emily's Notes

One thing I enjoyed about this pattern is how easy it is to make each square feel unique simply by changing the mushroom colors.

If you're planning a larger project like a blanket, I recommend making a few color combinations first and laying them out together before committing to a final palette.

It helps create a balanced look and prevents similar colors from clustering together once everything is joined.

Instructions

Round 1: Col A, make a magic ring, ch2 (doesn't count as st), into ring make: 2 hdc, 4 dc, 2 hdc, Col B 2 hdc into ring, Col C 2 hdc into ring, col B 2 hdc into ring, pull tail tight to close ring, col A sl st into 1st st to join. [14 sts].

Round 2: Col A, ch2 (doesn't count as st), 2 hdc in each of the next 2 sts, 2 dc in each of the next 4 sts, 2 hdc in each of the next 2 sts, col B 2 dc in each of the next 2 sts, col C 2 dc in each of the next 2 sts, col B 2 dc in each of the next 2 sts, col A, sl st into 1st st to join. [28 sts].

Round 5: Col D, ch2, 1 dc in each of the next 7 sts, (2 dc, ch2, 2 dc) in ch2-sp, 1 dc in each of the next 12 sts, (2 dc, ch2, 2 dc) in ch2-sp, 1 dc in each of the next 12 sts, (2 dc, ch2, 2 dc) in ch2-sp, 1 dc in each of the next 12 sts, (2 dc, ch2, 2 dc) in ch2-sp, 1 dc in each of the next 5 sts, sl st into 1st st to join.
