Not every crochet project has to be big to feel rewarding. Crochet coasters are an example of this.

Sometimes it's the small, useful pieces that bring the most joy - especially when they look this good.

These sunflower crochet coasters are one of those projects that instantly brighten a space, whether they're sitting under your morning coffee or stacked neatly on a Summer table.

They work beautifully in themed table styling, especially when combined with these apple crochet coasters or leaf crochet coasters.

You can find more ideas like these in these crochet home decor projects.

Sunflower crochet coasters are beginner friendly but still engaging, making them a great step forward if you're comfortable with basic stitches and ready to practice simple color changes.

They are great as standalone gifts, part of a handmade set, or even as a base for exploring more crochet flower ideas.

Once you make one, it's very hard not to keep going and create a whole matching set.

And if you're a lover of sunflowers like I am, you might want to make a matching set of sunflower crochet patterns with this sunflower crochet bag charm or crochet sunflower granny square.

Why You'll Love This Pattern

  • Bright, cheerful design that works year-round
  • Beginner friendly while still teaching basic color changes
  • Quick to make, so they're ideal for gifts or markets
  • Great for using up small yarn scraps
  • Functional décor that protects surfaces and looks good doing it
  • Great crochet gift idea - perfect for Easter, Christmas, and everything in between!

Materials Needed

Yarn

  • #2 light (DK, light worsted, 8ply) 100% cotton or cotton blend yarn with about 15 wraps per inch (WPI)*
  • You will be working with double strands. You can pick 2 yarn colors that compliment each other or 2 balls of the same color.

You will need:

  • Col A: Center color, e.g. brown 0.40 ounces /29 yards (11 grams / 26 meters)
  • Col B: Petal color, e.g. yellow. 0.56 ounces / 40 yards (16 grams / 37 meters)

Hook

  • 4.5 mm (7) hook

Other

  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors

*Wraps per inch (WPI) - this is a measure of yarn thickness. To measure WPI, count how many times the yarn wraps around a ruler in one inch. There are more wraps for thinner yarn and fewer wraps for thicker yarn.

Yarn and Hook Information

I recommend using cotton yarn for these coasters as it is more durable and can handle heat well.

You can also use thicker cotton yarn, such as #4 (worsted, 10 ply), just adjust the hook size accordingly.

If you do use #4 worsted weight yarn, you will not need to work double stranded.

The reason why I use 2 strands of #2 light cotton yarn is so that you can play with color variations by using complimenting strands of yarn. Or if worsted weight yarn is not available to you.

Skill Level

★★☆☆☆ - Beginner

If you're comfortable with simple stitches and changing colors, this project will feel very approachable.

It took me about 45 minutes per coaster, making it a relaxed evening make or a perfect weekend crochet project if you're creating a full set.

  • Col - Color
  • Hdc - Half Double Crochet
  • Sl st - Slip Stitch
  • Sc - Single Crochet
  • Pc - Popcorn Stitch (see special stitches below)

Special Stitches

Popcorn Stitch (Pc)

This stitch is easy to make and adds texture to your coasters. They are the little bumps found along the edge of the sunflower.

This stitch is worked in one stitch only.

How to popcorn stitch:

  1. Work 5 double crochets into the same stitch. It will look like a shell/fan.
  2. Remove the working loop from your hook.
  3. Reinsert your hook into the top of the 1st double crochet from front to back.
  4. Grab the dropped working loop and pull it through the first double crochet.
  5. Chain 1. Completed popcorn stitch.

Picot Stitch

  1. Chain 3
  2. 1 sl st into 2nd ch from hook. That's it!

Gauge

Gauge is not too important for these crochet sunflower coasters.

Finished Size

Sunflower crochet coasters.

This sunflower crochet coaster is about 6 inches (15 cm) in diameter (petal to petal). The inner circle is about 4 inches (10 cm) in diameter.

Crochet Tips, Yarn Choices, and Color Inspiration

  • Cotton yarn is ideal for coasters since it handles heat and moisture better than acrylic
  • Choose a deep brown or textured yarn for the center to add visual contrast
  • Keep your tension consistent during color changes to maintain a clean sunflower shape
  • Blocking lightly can help the coaster sit flat and look more polished
  • Classic sunflower: golden yellow petals with a brown center
  • Modern look: mustard, cream, and rust tones
  • Summer brights: yellow petals with a pop of orange or coral
  • Neutral homes: soft beige petals with a taupe center
