A small chunky crochet basket is a compact storage container made using bulky yarn and tight stitching to create structure in a small, practical form.

It's commonly used for organising small items while adding texture to home decor.

Made with super bulky yarn, it works up quickly, holds its shape beautifully, and adds a modern handmade touch to any space.

Whether you need a cute spot for keys, desk supplies, makeup, or small craft items, this compact crochet basket brings both charm and practicality to your home.

Because this is a one-skein (or less!) project, it's perfect for beginners or anyone who wants instant gratification from a new crochet pattern.

This small chunky crochet basket is also a wonderful crochet gift idea. Paired with a candle, treats, or self-care goodies, it becomes a personalized handmade gift for birthdays, holidays, or housewarmings.

Its versatility is another reason makers love this project - use it for entryway organization, nursery storage, office tidying, or simply as a stylish accent piece.

It's one of those projects where you finish one and instantly want to make more.

Grab your super bulky yarn, pick your favorite color, and enjoy crafting a little basket that's as practical as it is beautiful.

Skill Level: Beginner
Time Needed: Great weekend crochet project with a quick satisfying finish
Construction: Worked in rounds
Best For: Storage, organisation, decor

Materials Needed

Yarn

  • Super Bulky (#6) acrylic yarn with 5 WPI*.
    • I used Lion Brand Wool Ease (Thick and Quick), but you can use any super bulky yarn.
    • You will need about 1.12 ounces (32 grams) of yarn.
    • You will need about 62 yards (56meters) of yarn.

Hook

  • 10 mm (N/15) hook

Other

  • Yarn needle for weaving ends
  • Scissors

*Wraps per inch (WPI) - this is a measure of yarn thickness. To measure WPI, count how many times the yarn wraps around a ruler in one inch. There are more wraps for thinner yarn and fewer wraps for thicker yarn.

Stitches and Abbreviations - US Terms

  • Ch - Chain
  • St/s - Stitch/es
  • Sl st - Slip stitch
  • Sc - Single Crochet
  • Sp - Space
  • Blo - Back loop only
  • Reverse Single Crochet (Reverse sc) - See special stitches below
  • FO - Fasten off.
  • [ ] at the end of each row indicates how many stitches are needed in that row.

Special Stitches

Reverse Single Crochet (Crab stitch)

The reverse single crochet, also known as the crab stitch, is a very simple stitch that can add texture to your crochet. It's great to use for edgings, especially on baskets.

To reverse single crochet, instead of working in the direction you normally would, you instead work backward.

So, normally you would work towards the left. In reverse single crochet, you would work towards the right.

How to reverse single crochet:

  1. Insert your hook into the stitch to the right.
  2. Yarn over and pull up a loop. You should now have 2 loops on your hook.
  3. Yarn over and pull through both loops, like you would in a normal single crochet.

Gauge

Gauge is not too important for this project.

Emily's Notes

These are great confidence projects because they come together quickly and feel useful straight away.

Once you get the base right, the rest is just building up shape consistently.

From just one skein of chunky yarn, i managed to make this basket as well as these fingerless gloves, and chunky crochet headband.

Finished Size

Small chunky crochet basket.

The finished size of this small chunky crochet basket is about 4 inches (10 cm) in diameter and 2 inches (5 cm) tall.
