This sunflower crochet mug rug is a beginner-friendly crochet project that creates a small decorative mat designed for placing mugs or cups on.
It is worked using simple stitches and repetitive construction, making it a quick make that combines functionality with a floral sunflower design.
It's slightly larger than a coaster, giving you space not just for your drink but also for a small snack, spoon, or tea bag.
It uses similar skills but gives you a slightly bigger, more "complete" finished piece. It's still a quick crochet project to make, but feels a bit more substantial.
As a small giftable crochet project, this is a really strong option. It works well as a standalone gift or paired with a mug, tea, or coffee for a simple, thoughtful set.
It's also ideal for batching if you want to create multiple pieces for seasonal gifting or markets.

Other easy to make crochet sunflower patterns you might like to make include this crochet sunflower bookmark, sunflower applique, sunflower crochet coasters, sunflower crochet bag charm or sunflower granny square pattern.

Emily's Notes
Mug rugs are one of my favorite quick crochet projects because they're so forgiving and useful.
If your tension varies slightly, it usually won't matter too much structurally, but it will affect how flat the piece lies.
I like blocking mine lightly at the end so the edges settle and the sunflower design looks more defined on a flat surface.
Finished Size

The finished size of this crochet sunflower mug rug is about 6 inches (16 cm) x 4 inches (9.5 cm).
