A sunflower crochet bookmark is a small decorative crochet piece designed to mark pages in books using a sunflower motif worked with basic stitches.

It is a quick crochet project suitable for beginners and scrap yarn use.

In this pattern, you will make a sunflower crochet bookmark using simple stitches and basic shaping techniques to create a lightweight floral design that can be used to mark pages in books.

This project is quick to complete and works well for practising small-scale crochet while creating a functional decorative accessory.

It's also a great option if you like creating small giftable crochet projects, since it's quick project to make but still feels thoughtful.

Because it uses minimal yarn, this crochet flower bookmark sunflower design is ideal for scraps.

You can make multiple versions in different shades of yellow, brown, or even creative colour palettes without committing to a large project.

A crochet sunflower bookmark pattern is the kind of small handmade item that suits book lovers, teachers, or anyone who enjoys stationery with a personal touch.

Materials Needed

Yarn

  • #2 light (DK, light worsted, 8ply) 100% cotton or cotton blend yarn with about 15 wraps per inch (WPI)*
    • You will need:
      • Col A: Center color, e.g. brown (about 0.07 ounces, 5 yards / 2 grams, 4.6 meters)
      • Col B: Petal color, e.g. yellow (about 0.04 ounces, 2.5 yards / 1 gram, 2.3 meters)
      • Col C: Stem color, e.g. green (about 0.04 ounces, 2.5 yards / 1 gram, 2.3 meters)

Hook

  • 3 mm hook

Other

  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors

*Wraps per inch (WPI) - this is a measure of yarn thickness. To measure WPI, count how many times the yarn wraps around a ruler in one inch. There are more wraps for thinner yarn and fewer wraps for thicker yarn.

Yarn and Hook Information

This crochet bookmark is great to use up any scrap yarn you might have. Acrylic yarn works just as well, but for gifts, I find that 100% cotton usually looks nicer and is more durable.

I tested this pattern using milk cotton and a 3mm hook. I found that the bookmark didn't sit flat. Which is why I decided to use 100% cotton instead. In my opinion, it looked a lot more polished and it draped nicer over books.

If you want to use milk cotton, you could try using a slightly larger hook size, such as 3.5mm (E/4).

Gauge

Gauge is not too important for this crochet bookmark.

Emily's Notes

I like using sunflower bookmarks as a small "in-between" project when I don't feel like starting something big.

Because the shape is worked in such a small space, it's a good way to test color combinations before using them in larger floral projects like appliqués or granny square designs.

If you're making a few, I'd recommend experimenting with slightly different yellows and browns so each sunflower has its own personality when placed in a book.

Finished Size

Sunflower crochet bookmark.

The finished size of this sunflower crochet bookmark is about 2 inches (6 cm) wide and 10 inches (25 cm) long.
