Holiday crafting doesn't have to be complicated to be meaningful.

These Christmas tree crochet coasters are a great example of a simple project that still feels special, festive, and handmade.

Designed with beginners in mind, this project uses basic stitches, minimal sewing, and double-stranded cotton yarn to create a sturdy, functional coaster that's also decorative.

Each Christmas tree crochet coaster works up quickly, making it easy to create a full set in an afternoon or spread the project out over a few cozy evenings.

The tree shape and cute star detail add instant holiday appeal, while the cotton yarn makes them practical for everyday use.

Whether you're learning how to crochet or looking for a fast seasonal project, these Christmas tree crochet coasters are perfect for gifts, table decor, or adding a handmade touch to your Christmas celebrations.

Why You'll Love This Pattern

  • Quick and beginner-friendly crochet project
  • Festive design perfect for Christmas decor
  • Low sew construction keeps finishing simple
  • Great for handmade gift sets and stocking stuffers
  • Double-stranded yarn creates a sturdy, practical coaster
  • Fun way to practice how to crochet seasonal shapes

Materials Needed

Yarn

#2 light (DK, light worsted, 8ply) 100% cotton or cotton blend yarn with about 15 wraps per inch (WPI)*

  • You will be working with double strands for the body of the tree. You can pick 2 yarn colors that compliment each other or 2 balls of the same color.
    • The star and trunk is worked in single strand.
  • You will need about 0.38 ounces (11 grams) [27 yards / 25 metres] of yarn for the body of the tree in Color A.
  • For the trunk you will need about 0.04 ounces (1 gram) [2.5 yards / 2.3 metres] of yarn in Color B.
  • For the star you will need about 0.04 ounces (1 gram) [2.5 yards / 2.3 metres] of yarn in Color C.

Hook

  • 4.5mm (7) hook

Other

  • Yarn needle for weaving ends
  • Scissors

*Wraps per inch (WPI) - this is a measure of yarn thickness. To measure WPI, count how many times the yarn wraps around a ruler in one inch. There are more wraps for thinner yarn and fewer wraps for thicker yarn.

Yarn and Hook Information

I recommend using cotton yarn for these coasters as it is more durable and can handle heat well.

You can also use thicker cotton yarn, such as #4 (worsted, 10 ply), just adjust the hook size accordingly.

If you do use #4 worsted weight yarn, you will not need to work double stranded.

The reason why I use 2 strands of #2 light cotton yarn is so that you can play with color variations by using complimenting strands of yarn. Or if worsted weight yarn is not available to you.
