Materials Needed

Yarn

#2 light (DK, light worsted, 8ply) 100% cotton or cotton blend yarn with about 15 wraps per inch (WPI)*

  • You will need about 0.10 ounces (3 grams).
  • You will be working with double strands.

Hook

  • 5 mm (H/8) hook
  • 3 mm hook

Other

  • Yarn needle for weaving in ends
  • Scissors

*Wraps per inch (WPI) - this is a measure of yarn thickness. To measure WPI, count how many times the yarn wraps around a ruler in one inch. There are more wraps for thinner yarn and fewer wraps for thicker yarn.

Stitches and Abbreviations - US Terms

  • Ch - Chain
  • St/s - Stitch/es
  • Sl St - Slip Stitch
  • Dc - Double Crochet
  • Hdc - Half Double Crochet
  • [ ] at the end of each row indicates how many stitches are needed in that row.

Gauge

Gauge is not too important for these crochet gingerbread men.

Instructions

Working double stranded all the time.

Making the Body

Foundation: 5mm hook, Ch3, sl st into 1st ch to form a ring.

Round 1: Ch2 (counts as dc), 7 hdc into ring, sl st into top of ch2 to join. [8 hdc].

Round 2: Ch4, dc into 2nd ch from hook, dc into next st, hdc in last st of ch. Sl st into each of the next 2 sts.

*Ch6, in the 2nd ch from hook, dc, dc into each of the next 2 sts on the ch, hdc into each of the last 2 sts. [5 sts].*

Sl st into next st, repeat from *, sl st into next st, sl st into next st.

Ch4, in 2nd ch from hook dc, dc into next ch, hdc in last ch.

Sl st into next st. Fasten off, and weave in any ends.

Making the head

Foundation: Ch3, sl st into 1st ch to form a ring.

Round 1: Ch2 (counts as dc), 7 hdc into ring, sl st into top of ch2 to join. [8 hdc]. You will now attach the head to the body.

Sl st the head onto the 3 unworked stitches on the body piece to join. Make sure your head piece sits slightly on top of the body piece and both right sides are facing towards you.

Then, continue to sl st around the head piece until you have reached where you first joined it. Sl st into body piece. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Finishing the Gingerbread man

3mm hk: Using a smaller hook, sl st into the top of the head, ch 20, sl st into base of ch to form a loop, fasten off and weave in ends.

If you want you could sew on some facial features or use craft eyes.
